If you're at all involved in fandom, might I politely suggest that you read this:  [livejournal.com profile] xparrot 's fan types?  I think it applies across a whole host of fandoms, but while reading it, I had a lightbulb moment specifically with regard to some of the current politics in the online fandom for Bones

And that's all I'm going to say.  Go take a look if you have five minutes; I promise it's worth the time it will take you to read it.

wow. that was an excellent and very interesting read. certainly explains a lot of the conflict going on in the Bones fandom right now. i now know that i am DEFINITELY an emotionally fan who enjoys the occasional meta. haha! man that sounds good. glad she used the term "analytical" at the end instad of continuing with "intellectual" because for a moment there i thought i was on the "non-intelligent" side of fanning. but ohs well! i enjoy my shows and their insanity keeps me sane ;) thanks for linking this!

You're welcome! I'm glad it resonated with you. It made a lot of sense to me in terms of how different people approach fandom. Some ppl fall strongly in either of the two main camps, and some are somewhere in-between. I think I'm somewhere in the middle. Fandom conflict generally strikes me as really stupid, so I try my best to stay out of it. But it makes me crazy when I see people being told (in public forums) to shut up and take their squee, analysis, criticism, or whatever it is, elsewhere. If I can't accept that not everyone will agree with me or want the same things out of a show, I shouldn't be posting in a public forum.

I try to stay away from large public forums for that reason exactly. 206_bones is perfectly fine with me because most people there tend to be rather tolerant, which is nice. I can't imagine people having the gall enough to tell someone to take their excitement elsewhere. That's so rude.

I read that post a few weeks ago and definitely see the truth in what she's saying. Someone else on my flist had a big post regarding a different fandom where meta was looked down upon by many fans in lieu of squee. Basically, when analytical people wanted to deconstruct new episodes, emotional people told them to stop "harshing the squee" and "just enjoy the show". Differences in how people approach fandom has long been a bone of contention that's liable to start conflict. ;P

bone of contention
*g* LMAO

Like I said to trilliane above, fandom conflict generally strikes me as really stupid, so I try my best to stay out of it. That said, it makes me crazy when I see people being told (in public forums) to shut up and take their squee, analysis, criticism, or whatever it is, elsewhere. If I can't accept that not everyone will agree with me or want the same things out of a show, I shouldn't be posting in a public forum.

An excellent read.

That should definitely be posted at 206 - might help to resolve some of the tension and help everyone understand each other better.

I completely agree with her post. I'm definitely the emotional fan with a pinch of meta in the mix :)

I think I will make a post in my own lj linking to that post too. Thanks for sharing with us!

How are things with you? How is the pregnancy going, etc.? Miss you darling! Much love to you ♥

Wow, that's really well thought out. I'm definitely somewhere in the middle. A mix, if you will. I try not to get involved with fandom drama, but it never hurts to read something like this.

Thanks for sharing!

First of all ... love that icon *dies*

I found this profound, because it explains why there are some forums (and some fans) that I just have to avoid. And those seem to be the ones that are way to far to one side of this. I like to analyze, chew over, discuss, etc., my favorite shows - but I reserve the right to squee if Booth takes his shirt off.

Very interesting food for thought ...

I've been off-line a lot and I don't have a TV anymore, so I haven't seen Bones in a while or participated in the fandom. Thank goodness, I suppose. I just like the show, the characters, and the actors. I'm glad I'm missing any kind of deep philosophical debates about it. Ha hah. I love David B and Emily D so much, I'll watch them and the others until the cows come home! (When I get my TV back.)
